Traffic safety is one of the main reasons why the Ministry of the Interior in Qatar has established several departments and sections that will preserve safety on the road. The Ministry of the Interior separated road safety functions for each department with their own organizational structure in order to facilitate the work of each departments.

The General Directorate of Traffic is one of those departments that are concerned in achieving traffic safety on the road and falls under several sections such as: patrol and traffic investigation department, Licensing and Registration Department, Traffic Information and Awareness Department, and finally Traffic Engineering and Safety Department.

It is well known that traffic regulation in the world has started from the beginning of the use of vehicles as in the State of Qatar. The authorities began to carry out the tasks of traffic such as traffic regulation and licensing of vehicles and so many others.

Gradually, with the development and increasing use of vehicles in Qatar, the state has begun to set laws that will maintain traffic safety on the road for both passengers and pedestrians. With the growing development, the General Directorate of Traffic has established its various departments which we will talk about one of them that is Traffic Engineering and Safety Department.

What is Traffic Engineering and Safety Department and what is its role?

The Traffic Engineering and Safety Department is concerned with ensuring traffic safety on the road through the regular engineering test of streets and traffic lights and supervising the proper installation. Monitoring road works and ensuring that they are of the required quality and abide to safety requirements on the road. In addition to developing controlling plans for traffic to achieve safety on the road.

Traffic Engineering and Safety Department aims to carry out the following tasks in order to maintain the smooth flow of traffic and the safety of citizens:

Proposing the annual plan of management, and implementing it after its adoption within the framework of the ministry's policy.
Developing the necessary programs and policies to improve traffic and road engineering.
Setting the traffic safety standards and conditions related to the roads, in coordination with the competent authorities.
locate and control the installation of radars and signal cameras.
Giving permits to close the streets and detect the locations of remittances, in coordination with the concerned authorities.
Determining the location of bumps and their conditions and insure correct installation.
Supervision of road works and transfers by companies, and ensure the existence of the relevant permits.
Control of alternative road transfers, especially in the main streets, and ensure that they comply with traffic safety requirements.
Monitor truckloads and heights, and adjust vehicles according to traffic law.
Issuing licenses for driving schools, car rental companies and limousines, exhibitions for the sale and purchase of mechanical vehicles, vehicle decorating shops, repair shops for mechanical vehicles, and performing supervision and inspection work.
Propose the draft annual budget of the Department.
