1. Learn How to Replace a Worn or Broken Belt

 

Your engine has many belts that help its operation, including the fan belt and the alternator belt. The fan belt activates the fan to cool the engine, and the alternator belt keeps the battery charged.

 

When any of these belts are worn out or broken, your car will not operate correctly. So learn how to change the fan belt, alternator belt and belt serpentine which is one of the most complicated belts to learn how to replace it. However, learning to do the job yourself can save you thousands of dollars.

2. Learn To Replace An Alternator

 

When you turn on your car, the alternator keeps the car battery charged. When the alternator belt is disrupted or the alternator goes out, the battery will not hold the charge and will not work correctly.

 

Replacing the alternator is one of the simplest tasks in most cars. All you need to fix it is a few keys, or a socket set and it takes less than an hour.

 

3. Learn to Replace Brake Pads

 

Brake pads are one of the most important safety features of your car. The brake pad determines the quality and condition of the speed and smoothness that your car can stop when you need it.

 

If you heard a noise or the brakes do not responded when used, you have to replace them by using some tools and a few basic mechanical skills.

 

4. Learn to Fix Coolant Leaks

 

Have you noticed spots of green or yellow liquid on the floor under your car? This is an  indicator about radiator leak. The coolant is the liquid that circulates around your engine to keep it cool during operation.

 

When coolant leak occurs, the engine heat will increase and may cause even greater problems. These leaks usually occur because of a cracked or scratched hose or maybe a crack in the radiator. 5. Learn to Replace Filters

 

Your vehicle has three main filters: fuel filter, air filter and oil filter. The fuel filter removes dust and small debris from the fuel line so it doesn’t damage the engine. The air filter prevents dust from entering the engine while the engine absorbs air. Finally, the oil filter keeps the engine clean by filtering the oil.

 

Depending on the type and model of the car, sometimes replacing different filters may be difficult. But there are special tools that facilitate the replacement of these filters.

 

6. Learn to Change Your Oil

 

Changing cars oil is one of the easiest and simplest repairs anyone can make.

You will need to place a bucket under the oil plug so you can fill  the old oil as it leaks. Then, refill the engine with new oil. This is not complicated, and it should take not more than half an hour to complete.

 

7. Learn to Replace Your Distributor Cap and Rotor

 

The distributor cap is the engine part that distributes the voltage from the coil to the correct drive cylinder. This process enables your car to work. It is also an easy car repair.
